Drainage Meets Innovation: Dubai’s Latest Green Infrastructure Project Complete
As part of its strategic effort to enhance smart urban development, Dubais has achieved the completion of the Dhs277 million Nad Al Sheba 3 sewerage and rainwater drainage network, located across 340 hectares and serving a maximum of 300 residential plots, indicating Dubai’s dedication to creating a resilient, sustainable and future-ready city in the long term.
Constructed by Dubai Municipality this project falls under two bigger programmes: the Dhs30 billion programme for rainwater drainage(Tasreef) and the Dhs80 billion programme which upgrades the sewerage system. These initiatives are central to the emirate’s objective of enhancing public health, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure performance.
Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted the project’s significance: “Completing the Nad Al Sheba 3 project is a major step in realising Dubai’s ambition to connect all urban areas to an integrated drainage and sewerage network. It positions the city to effectively meet climate and urbanisation challenges for the next century.”
The technical scope of the project is impressive. The sewerage network extends over 24 kilometres, with pipelines ranging from 200 to 800 millimetres in diameter. An extra 11 kilometres of household connections guarantee continuous service deliveries to individual properties.
An equally important feature is the rainwater management scheme. The extensive pumping station at 4,000 litres per second (31 kilometres of gravity-based pipelines from diameter of 250 to 1,500 millimetres) has been built to assist with flood risk protection and improve reliability during extraordinary weather events.
“The project symbolizes Dubai Municipality’s commitment to engaging advanced technologies with intelligent engineering,” said bin Ghalita. “Not only are we serving our people better than ever, but we are also enhancing Dubai’s position as a world leader in infrastructure innovation.”
Nad Al Sheba 3 has a long-term approach to efficiency and sustainability, and it represents far more than just infrastructure improvement. Rather, it forms part of the broader approach of Dubai Municipality in developing a smart, resilient urban future that is admired globally.
