‘Things we do for Orange Jesus’: Liz Cheney’s book slams Trump and Republicans

In her forthcoming book “Oath and Honor,” Liz Cheney offers a critical examination of the Republican Party, accusing her former colleagues and party leaders of being complicit enablers of Donald Trump, particularly following the 2020 election. Cheney, a former representative, characterizes the GOP’s actions as a betrayal of their constitutional oath, driven by political convenience and allegiance to Trump.
The book, which CNN obtained prior to its December 5 release, describes Trump as “the most dangerous man ever to inhabit the Oval Office.” Cheney’s narrative includes a harsh critique of Kevin McCarthy, the former House Speaker, and his successor, Mike Johnson. She portraysMcCarthy as someone who acknowledged Trump’s election loss in private conversations but publicly supported Trump’s claims. Johnson is depicted as overly eager to be in Trump’s favor.
Cheney’s book serves as both a chronicle of her realization of the dangers posed by Trump and his allies’ efforts to overturn the 2020 election and a warning about the potential consequences if Trump were to be re-elected in 2024. She asserts that while the nation can withstand harmful policies for a term, it cannot survive a president who seeks to undermine the Constitution.
The book also details Cheney’s role as vice chair of the House’s January 6 committee, revealing new insights into Trump’s attempts to overturn the election. Cheney accuses her Republican colleagues of hypocrisy, noting that many were aware of Trump’s defeat but still supported his actions, posing a threat to democracy.
Cheney, who has not ruled out a 2024 presidential run, pledges to do everything possible to prevent Trump’s return to the White House, even if it means leaving the GOP should Trump become the nominee. In response, Trump’s spokesperson dismissed the book as fiction.
As per the CNN report, in her account of the events leading up to the Capitol attack on January 6, Cheney recalls a moment in the GOP cloakroom. Here, members of the party were prompted to endorse their support on sheets designated for electoral vote objections. These sheets were arranged on a table, each representing the states that the Republicans were challenging. Cheney notes that most members recognized the act as nothing more than a hollow gesture, a mere show of loyalty to Donald Trump.
Cheney specifically mentions Republican Congressman Mark Green from Tennessee in her narrative. As Green proceeded to sign his name on each document, he made a candid remark, albeit to no one in particular. Cheney quotes him saying, “The things we do for the Orange Jesus.” This comment, made somewhat sheepishly by Green, encapsulates the sentiment of obligation and perhaps reluctance that some members felt in participating in this symbolic act.
Cheney’s account includes revelations about McCarthy’s visit to Trump at Mar-a-Lago after the January 6 attack and her interactions with other Republicans, including Jim Jordan and Mike Johnson. She describes the internal GOP dynamics and the pressure she faced for her stance against Trump.
According to the CNN report, the book concludes with Cheney’s warning about the dangers Trump poses to the country’s future and a call to action for Americans to unite against Trump and his supporters, emphasizing the importance of this cause over partisan politics.
