LONDON: Former British deputy head teacher Matthew Smith has been jailed for 12 years after admitting paying £66,000 (Rs 69 lakh) to two teenagers (aged 18 and 17) in India to sexually abuse boys in India aged under 13 and send him images and videos of the acts. The prosecution said Smith had also said he would pay the abusers’ school fees in return for the child sex abuse visuals.

Smith (35), from East Dulwich, London, pleaded guilty to 22 counts, including encouraging the rape of a child under 13, causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, as well as making and distributing indecent images of children, and possession of an image portraying intercourse with a dog.
Officers recovered over 120,000 indecent images of children from Smith’s devices, the chats and records from which showed that Smith would instruct young men in India on Telegram to perform sexual acts on underage boys. Smith would send them images and videos as examples of ones he would like to receive in return.

The offences took place between December 2016 and his arrest in London on November 6, 2022.
Smith worked in orphanages and NGOs across India between 2007 and 2014. Aged 24 he moved to Chennai and spent three years living there before moving to Nepal to work at a school until July 2022 when he returned to the UK.Last September he began working as a deputy head teacher at a primary school in London.
Southwark Crown Court heard how when Smith was working as a teacher in Kathmandu, he paid one male teenager in India £7,000 (Rs 7.4 lakh) to sexually abuse his younger brother, aged 10, and send Smith images and videos of the crime.
Smith paid another male teenager in India £59,000 (Rs 62 lakh) to sexually abuse another boy aged seven or eight in return for images.
Martin Hooper, prosecuting, said: “At the defendant’s request, the teenager went and found young males to live with him so they could be sexually abused and the defendant said he would pay their school fees in return.”
Sentencing Smith to 12 years in prison, judge Martin Griffith said he considered Smith was “dangerous” but had reduced his sentence owing to Smith’s guilty pleas and expression of remorse.
Smith stared ahead with a neutral expression. He has been placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Mitigating, Sarah Vine KC told the court Smith had been teaching other inmates to read and write whilst in prison. “He hopes when he leaves, he will have made some reparations for the harm he has done,” she said.
The National Crime Agency told TOI: “Investigators found evidence of potential offending by Smith against children while he was working in India. The NCA shared information with the Indian authorities and continues to work with them. There is no evidence to suggest he committed offences against children based in Nepal or the UK.”
